My wife and I didn't plan on having children. I made it clear that I wasn't fond of the idea and as far as I knew, she felt the same, so you can imagine the shock I felt when she came into our bedroom with a three positive pregnancy tests.

I wasn't looking forward to seeing my wife going through the pangs of pregnancy. The mood swings, the weight gain, the vomit, the sleeplessness, the constant stress and worry… the idea of pregnancy being beautiful is a romance. The reality, as any woman who's been pregnant will tell you, is much MUCH harder.

More than anything, I wasn't looking forward to the strain it would put on our relationship. My wife and I argue, as all couples do, but we always make up (and if I may, have INCREDIBLE sex afterwards). I knew that the introduction of a child would upset that dynamic.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry about any of that anymore. It's amazing what a simple staircase can do.
