Pest Control – Short Horror Story

The supply run turned up little this time. Barely enough to feed the four of us for another two weeks. Couldn't even find some half decent batteries or ammunition for our weapons.

The city isn't even remotely safe to traverse anymore- half the buildings and streets are so unstable that even a loud noise could collapse them. One poor bastard barely made it a fourth of the way across one walkway before it collapsed and caused him to fall to his death.

If that wasn't enough, the aliens and their dreadful machines still roam the city, looking for any possible survivors to kill in cold blood. Just last week, we saw another band of survivors. They had the misfortune to be spotted by one of the aliens' levitating machines. They were torn apart one by one, with the last pleading for mercy- a plea that was not answered.

The aliens didn't loot the corpses. They took absolutely nothing. No food, water, ammunition, or anything even slightly important. They simply killed the survivors and left them to rot.

My mother says she still remembers vividly when they came. They appeared in the sky in their warships across all our cities. They did not answer our attempts to communicate with them. They opened fire upon the cities with their cannons, their weapons' projectiles going right through the shields- something we thought impossible. Tens of thousands died within only the first 30 minutes. All attempts to return fire ended in failure- the anti-ship cannons were destroyed first.

After that, the guns stopped. They deployed their ground troops to hunt us down. They marched in chilling unity. Their machines, piloted or no, were nigh-unstoppable by even our most advanced anti-armor weapons. The individual troops shot at everything that moved- even the civilians. Our men, women, and even children were all cut down without mercy or remorse.

My mother even remembers how it all began. It was a scouting expedition to an undiscovered planet. The planet was discovered to not only be teeming with life, but with a fully developed, if somewhat technologically primitive, society. During the scouting mission, one craft accidentally fired upon what they perceived to be a threat- a group of flying vehicles approaching the scouting craft. The ship was shot down, and we had to abandon them as per mission protocol.

We believe they salvaged and reverse-engineered our technology from the downed scouting ship. They then used it to begin their wrathful, hate-fueled genocide against or species.

My mother always warns me nowadays, "If you ever find a way off this planet… beware those aliens. Always remember what they did to us, all because of what a few of us did on the planet called 'Earth.'"
