Mistake – Short Horror Story

“Angelique, you’re so fucking stupid!” Wren snarls at me.

She’s ugly right now. Her jaw juts out, her brows are practically touching in a v, and there’s absolute hate in her eyes. Dawn shifts back and forth nervously.

“It’s not her fault, Wren. Like, there’s a lot to it and we all should’ve checked.” Dawn says shakily.

“Don’t defend her!” Wren snaps “We were all in charge of something! Natalie had the candles! I killed a fucking goat! You’ve been practicing Latin for a month! All she had to do was draw some fucking lines! We’re lucky we’re not all dead!”

She gestures dramatically to what used to be Natalie. Dawn begins to sob. I turn and gaze out the window.

“I didn’t even want to do this!” Dawn laments “You guys wanted to do the witch thing. I told you I didn’t want to. I told you it wasn’t something to mess around with!”

“Shut the fuck up, Dawn! We didn’t make you do anything you didn’t want to!” Wren yells “And stop crying! It’s loose now and we can’t let anyone know it was us.”

“Don’t you think we should catch it, before…” Dawn glances towards Natalie’s charred pile of bones and dissolves into tears again.

“How are we even supposed to do that?? We couldn’t even control it. Listen. Everyone thought Natalie was a freak. We could let them think it was her. I say we clean up any evidence that we were here, let some rando find her, and just never talk about this again.” Wren hisses.

From the corner of my eye I can see her pacing back and forth. Her feet kicking up the chalk of my broken pentagram. She turns to me.

“And you,” I can hear in her voice that her eyes are slits and her mouth is twisted, “I never want to see your fucking face again.”

I stand still facing the window, a smirk on my face. Wren grabs my shoulder and forces me around.

“WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!” She screams into my face.

I stare into her eyes and gently place my hands upon her cheeks. Then I smile. She sees my red eyes and rows of teeth. For the first time since the summoning Wren is speechless. I give her neck a quick twist and she falls to the floor. Dawn’s jaw drops. I savor her terror.

“No, no, no! Please don’t! I’m so sorry!” She finally says as I corner her. Before she can beg anymore, I rip her heart out with my teeth. I watch the blood pump from her gaping chest. I strut to the window and look over the unsuspecting town. Now that I’ve feasted, I’m ready to begin my reign of terror.
