The Dead only dream : Scary Stories – Short Horror Story

Dark dreary clouds hung over the cemetery as my family gathered around the white pearl coffin that held the lifeless husk that was once my mother. Underneath the lid she was adorned in her favorite floral summer dress, hair done in curls and makeup just how she preferred when she was living.

One by one each of my family and friends, familiar and distant placed a hand upon the coffin and quietly spoke “dream well” This is the new custom when attending a funeral, only after we learned what the traditional burial preparation was doing to the dead.

When someone passes their organs are harvested, and they are pumped with a slurry of chemicals to embalm and preserve the body. However back then we did not know the dead could dream. When their eyes are removed, we take away the ability to dream. Instead of going to some religious lie or just being gone, the dead are treated to an endless theater of worlds and realities.

For hundreds of years, we have taken that from the dead. All to make a funeral for the living. We deprived the grand prize after life for billions of people. But now we know, all those people that died before, are stuck. Stuck in an endless black abyss of torment and despair.

Forever trapped under a sepulcher of dirt and darkness.
