I was paid to not ask questions. – Short Horror Story

I own a couple hundred acres of land that, for security reasons, I won't divulge the location of. My Mother inherited the land from her parents, and she sold the land to me when she retired. Some of the land is a filthy swamp, but most of it is fertile. I've purchased some cows and chickens for my land. Not many, unfortunately, as most of my money went to my mother for the purchase.

My financial state has always been less than desirable, but I've been able to make ends meet working as a farmhand for my neighbor, he pays me a fair wage for a hard day's work, and honestly it's the only thing keeping the lights on at the moment. I get some money for the eggs and milk that my livestock make but, frankly, it's pocket money.

One day, my neighbor approached me with another offer. He wanted to use my land to store some items that he had no room for. I figured it would be farm equipment or excess grain, but it was just 4 portable storage units. They looked like the things you see trains pulling, but about half the size. He put them near the swamplands so they'd be out of the way, in case I got more livestock.

I didn't mind him putting extra storage on my land, until he started making weekly visits to the units, and then nightly. I tried to go out there when he was doing god-knows-what on my land, but whenever I got close, he'd conveniently be 'done' doing what he was doing. It was tough for me to distrust the man who was paying my bills, but if something untoward was going on on my property, I'd probably be liable, right?

One day I decided that enough was enough, and I took the bolt cutters to the lock and went inside. I used the flashlight on my phone to check out the insides, and it wasn't much. There was a riding lawn mower, random boxes filled with assorted junk, an old car, and furniture. There were 4 containers in total, and the inventory of each one was quite similar. I felt pretty bad about snooping. I decided to replace the locks in the morning and confess to what I did. If he fires me because of this, then I guess I have it coming.

That night I heard a commotion in my front yard. I rushed outside with my gun in hand, ready for whatever might be out there. It was my neighbor and a naked girl. She screamed at me for help as my neighbor wrapped his hands around her mouth to keep her quiet. He threw a wad of cash at my feet and asked me, "Is there a problem?"

I picked up the cash and counted it out. I looked at the girl and looked at my neighbor.

"Double it, monthly, and we won't have any issues."
