A young boy’s mother was called in to work the night shift. Cash was tight, and the single mother had no choice but to accept. As the shift would only be for a single night, the mother thought it would be okay to leave the boy alone in the house. She couldn’t afford a babysitter anyways.

Before the mother left, she told her boy to make sure everything was always locked. Since the boy wasn’t very tall for his age, his mother made sure that the windows were locked, as the boy couldn’t reach their latches. His mother also told him to leave the front door’s security chain unlocked, since otherwise she wouldn’t be able enter the house later even if she unlocked the handle and deadbolt.

After his mother left, the boy went straight to his computer, burning away the rest of the evening by playing flash games he found online. Eventually, it became late, so the boy made sure the deadbolt and handle on the front door was locked. Then he went to bed.

Later that night, the boy was woken up by a sudden thud. Whether it came from inside or outside the house didn’t matter: the boy’s first instinct was to check if the front door was locked. Thankfully, the front door was fully locked—deadbolt, handle, security chain and all. Breathing a sigh of relief, the boy went back to bed.
