Chapter 13: we need to talk

[Chapter 1](

“Hey guys, we made… lunch” I looked through the door and saw Casey laying in my brother’s lap. Their faces were almost touching. It seemed like I should have knocked before bursting into his room.

The two looked at me, as if I had caught them in the middle of sex. Well, they were both virgins and I doubted that they kissed each other before so this was a little more intense for them. Matt reacted way quicker than Casey. Even though I hated to admit it, but my brother wasn’t dumb. He at all times found a solution to anything and that often really quick. “We’ll, be down in a sec, we are doing homework, you know?” “Practical Biology or what? Well, you won’t need more than a minute.” We were both pretty quick-witted, which often lead to really funny arguments. Our Parents didn’t even stop us in situations like this. They just enjoyed the show.

This time I decided to give him a little break and both of them a little privacy. I went out and rushed down the stairs. Mia was in the kitchen, cleaning up the mess we made. “Leave that to me. You’re still the guest.” I hugged her from behind and laid my head on her shoulder. She was wearing one of my shirts and I somehow liked that. She turned around and caused me to fall forwards. “So that’s your plan?” I wondered she would catch and hug me, but instead I felt her hands on my shoulder, holding me away from her. “We need to talk Sophie.”

My heart dropped. Everything was perfect, what happened? Did I do anything wrong? It was the first time I did something where actual feelings were involved, maybe I made a enormous mistake without even noticing. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s not as bad as you think. I just… my parents are mid divorce and I was drunk when this started. I’m not saying that I don’t like you. I just want to be clear about my feelings because I don’t wanna hurt either of us.” She really cared about what would happen between between us. About me. I just couldn’t hold back and hugged her. It was more of a hug between friends who were expressing their happiness. After a while she returned the hug. “Don’t worry, I want to be with you and I also can’t wait.” She pulled a little away and then kissed me on the lips.

It was the first time in my life I was speechless. I usually had my sexual relationships and none cared about the other but this girl seemed to find out what I felt, cared about that and also felt something for me. Kinda unbelievable that something like this never happened to me before. I sighed and looked her in the eyes. “I’ll wait. In the meantime I’ll care about you anyway.” She smiled and in this moment I knew why my brother cared about Casey that much. Seeing her like this made everything else unimportant.

“I don’t wanna interrupt you, but you interrupted our homework, so I’ll guess we can interrupt your ‘cooking’.” Matt and Casey really came down instead of doing what they obviously wanted. I let go of Mia and sat down at the table. “Well, at least we really cooked something.” Everyone laughed.

It felt good seeing Mia and Casey laugh again. I wondered about her words. I either had something like a one night stand or friends with advantages, but something like this was new to me. I remembered how she held me and how she cared about me, even though her problems were much bigger and could think rationally about what would be the best for us. I’ve at all times liked her, but not up to this level. Was this what love felt like? I didn’t know what I really was, but I wanted to keep this, no matter what.

The amused atmosphere got interrupted by a ringtone. Mia. She pulled out her phone and looked in the screen. Her eyes widened for a moment. “It’s Mum.” She accepted the call and everyone went silent. I noticed Casey taking Matt’s hand. She didn’t even cared about hiding it. We couldn’t hear what her mother was saying but we could guess user account to Mia’s response. “Yeah, we’ll see. See you then.” She ended the call and looked at her sister. “They want to meet us in two hours.” Casey silently nodded and Mia turned to Matt. “Could you drive us?” My brother agreed agreed and laid an arm around his ‘best friend’. Even though I was way more worried about Mia, I had to admit that Casey looked worse than her. She hid her face in my brother’s shoulder and probably started crying. Mia stood up and hugged her sister from the side. She also had tears in her eyes. “It’s gonna be okay, don’t worry.” These were Casey’s words. It didn’t seem very convincing because she was suffering even more but I guessed it was just her, being a big sister.

I didn’t know what to do. I had no idea how I should enter this group hug, but luckily everyone released each other after a while and they started putting the dishes away. I felt kinda useless and decided to give Mia’s hand a short squeeze while handing her a knife. She smiled for a moment but this expression vanished shortly after. Still, she knew that I was there for her and I hoped this helped her gaining the energy for the upcoming talk.
