“Well, what if I bought them for you?”

“Really?” She said, spinning around and looking at him. She was never one to turn down something free. Especially something as throwaway as a pair of flip flops. “I mean, if you’re offering.” She said with a shrug, walking over and placing her cheap pair back on the rack as she grabbed the leather ones.

“Well, shouldn’t we try them on?” He said, motioning towards a small bench that sat against the wall.

“Oh, yeah sure. I guess.” She said as she dropped her tote bag and sat down. She dropped the new sandals onto the floor, and was about to move her feet over to the new shoes as he stopped her.

“Well, one moment. Do you mind?” He said, dropping to his knees in front of her as he took one shoe in his hand. He slowly reaches down, lifting her up by her ankle and gently removing her sandal as he holds her foot up in the air for a moment. “Wow….” He mutters, before gently guiding the new flip flop onto her foot.

“Umm…” Ellie stammers, not entirely sure how to handle what just happened between them. “Yeah, the shoes look
Good.” She said, unsure of what the price of these “free” shoes really was. Was this one of those weirdo foot fetish guys? She shifted slightly in her seat as her one foot was let down as the other raised. His hands felt.. well… comforting? There was this mix of strength and softness in his grip. And as his fingers lightly brushed against her toes while switching out the shoes, she couldn’t help but feel a certain tingle run up her leg.

“Well, Thankyou, they look good!” She said, awkwardly smiling as she let both of her feet drop down to the floor. The new flip flops felt much better, and she wiggled her toes a bit as she looked down at them. “They feel way better than those spa ones.” She said with a nervous laugh. “Well, I think I’ll go ring the bell now and we’ll be on our way? You still need to find that towel don’t you?” She says as she stands up and grabs her tote bag.

He smiles as he stands up with her. Now that they’re facing one another, Ellie is a bit taken by how much she has to strain her neck just to look up at him. He looks down at her, and she can still feel his eyes going down to her legs and feet. “Yes, well, let me tell you something. I’m pretty sure I can just grab one at the hotel. But Ellie, I must say, there’s something about you I find fascinating. And I’d like to get to know you better.”

Ellie raises her eyebrows, gripping her tote bag against her chest as she looks up at him. “You’ve found me fascinating already?” She asks, skepticism already flowing from her voice. She had a hard time believing a guy she wondered was trying to get in her pants. “I’m sorry but I find that hard to believe. Seems like you’re trying to smooth talk.”

He opened his arms to try and offer a reassuring posture. “Oh no, not at all.” He said. “I totally understand your skepticism. After all, we’ve just met. How would I know? But Ellie, there’s a certain aura about you. Something that’s drawing me in. You see, I’m a writer by trade. And you have something about you that I want to get more familiar with.” He said as he smiled, his eyes tracing up and down Ellie.

“So what, you’re writing a short story and I’m the main character?” Ellie said, her eyes remaining strained in skepticism as she listening to this stranger. She kept her arms crossed in front of her.

“Oh no, not quite. I wouldn’t call myself a fiction writer. It’s actually really rooted in reality. I’ll tell you what. Can I buy you a drink and explain? And maybe you can tell me all about you?” He said.

Ellie looked around, glancing back at the unoccupied register. She wasn’t mad at the idea of a free drink at the resort bar. Maybe he’d cover a couple margs for Her. She didn’t quite believe his writer slant. But she was admittedly interested in seeing where he was taking this. It didn’t hurt that he’d been very complimentary at a time she needed it. “You know what? I think I’d like that. Shouldn’t we pay first?”

He smiled, bending over and picking up the spa sandals as he set them down on the rack. “I don’t think anybody’s going to notice.” He said with a smile as he gestured towards the door.

Ellie shrugs and walks out with him by her side. As he opens the door the bell rings and they step out onto the street again.

They walked along the sidewalk, Mark taking the gentlemanly approach by walking on the side closest to the road. “So, Ellie. I guess we can start with you before we get to drinks. Tell me about yourself.”

“Well, what’s there to say? I’m Ellie, I’m 23, I work as a recruiter for a tech company. And I’m here because I just went through a nasty breakup. And I needed to get away.” She shared as they entered the resort and passed through the lobby to the bar facing the ocean.

“A breakup? Well I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve found that in my line of work I have to stay an arms distance away from relationships that get serious. It just complicated things.” He says as they walk into the bar. He finds a table situated against a railing that overlooks the ocean and pulls a chair out for her. “Please, take a seat.”
