The old captains had been so clever to keep
the minds of the shipmates up off of the sea
from the murk and the monsters that lurk in the deep
with stories of the night sky;
eternal heroes in pins of light leading them all through the billowing night
It kept their eyes up to the stars
though they burned only pinholes and the sea collects all that pours into its depths it was enough for them then.
So, more light, now I had thought.
but as I look to the sky, I worry
that clever stories may not be enough
because when the darkness of space has lit up
where can I tell them to look?
