One
As long as there are other vehicles around you, you are safe. You will not need to continue reading past this point. Continue driving, and avoid branching off to other roads if possible. Perhaps stop at a small town and rent a room for the night just to be safe; but be careful to choose a place you’re familiar with. It’ll be safe to drive again in the morning.

Two
If you reach an area where there are no passing cars or signs of civilization, stay alert. Your main focus is to see if you can spot any sign of life (aside from vegetation). Do not stop the vehicle. Do not pull over. Most importantly of all, no matter what you do, keep your hands off your phone. That is the first way they will find you.

Three
If you still don’t see non-vegetative signs of life nor traffic signs after a half hour of driving in seclusion, do not turn around and drive back. You are lost, and you don’t want to be found. Don’t touch your phone, no matter how afraid you are. Do this correctly, and you won’t need to even make a call. Just keep driving. If you have already turned around, skip to eight.

Four
As you drive along, one of two things will happen to the road; it will either take you across a bridge, or bring you to a fork in the road. If you reach the bridge, you’ve been granted an early safe passage. Skip to seven. If you reach the fork, you must turn left. Immediately skip to eight if you have already turned right. Turning around to go left will only make your situation worse.

Five
You only need to read this if you have safely turned left at the fork. As you drive along, a cloud of mist will begin to envelop either side of the road. Do not look into the fog, and stay focused on your destination. I can assure you, you will not get through this fog without seeing something. Whatever this “something” may be, do not look at it. The road should be your only concern.

Six
Once the sheet of mist clears, you will find a gas station straight ahead. It is not real*.* Continue driving past it, and do not look back.

Seven
At exactly midnight, you will come across a street lamp. This will be the end of your journey. You are safe now, and shall be reunited with the public roads you are familiar with.
But.
If midnight has passed, the lamp light is green, or you do not see any other buildings, continue to eight.

Eight
You are in danger, but you still have a chance. Only look at the road. Do not let yourself get distracted by the movement out of your peripheral, or anything you may see from a rearview mirror. They want to be seen—don’t encourage them.

Nine
On your drive, you will come across a being taking on the appearance of an elderly man walking along the side of the road. Pull over and unlock your car. The engine must be off by the time he approaches. He will enter the backseat and make himself comfortable, even fastening his seatbelt as if he expects you to take him somewhere. Your engine must stay off. Do not leave your vehicle, especially to open any door of your vehicle for him, and don’t make eye contact. He does not understand nor enjoy human acts of courtesy.

Ten
You can no longer drive from here. Listen closely to the old man’s words. You will be able to understand him if you push past the other languages layered in his voice and find the one that is yours. Everyone has a bit of trouble with their first experience with a universal language, and he will be understanding of this. Keep in mind that his patience is not eternal, and neither is your time. He will ask you a question about where you are from once he believes you should have picked up on how to understand him, to which you must answer verbally in your own language. If you answer to his satisfaction, he will offer you a box in one hand, and a locket in the other. Take the necklace and put it on. You will not be able to open it just yet.

Eleven
The old man will then leave with the box, and disappear off the side of the road. Once he is gone, your time will be very limited. If he has deemed you worthy of life, there will be a small key in the backseat for the locket. Take it and unlock the necklace. You only have a few seconds, so you must be quick about it. If there is no key, you are too late.
I’m sorry.

Twelve
As soon as the key is turned inside of the locket, your eyes will be forced shut. Do not try to open them. They will take that as an invitation.

Thirteen
Once your eyes open again, you will find yourself inside your vehicle, pulled off on the side of the road you last remember from your route. Start your car and resume your journey. You are safe.

Just hope. Pray. Beg. Dream that you will not return to the road you escaped from, because if you find yourself back there, they will not let you leave again.
