The morning sun streamed in, waking Janet up.

She was excited- it was the first day of the summer holidays and the first day in their new house. She wanted to go exploring. This was a “nice” neighbourhood, very different from the one they had left behind, and she knew her parents were super-happy to be here too, and so was she.

She put on one of her nicer outfits, a new rather booby crop top and tight red bike shorts – she didn’t want any new girls to think she was slutty, but she did want to make an impression. Hoping to deflect any criticism from her mom she pulled on a pretty pastel cardigan, and bounded downstairs, into the brand new kitchen which already smelled of pancakes and syrup and suburban goodness.

“Morning mommy!” she sang out to her mom, whose back was turned to her, stirring something in a big blue ceramic bowl.

Mom turned around and smiled silently.

Janet screamed.

Her mom’s eyes were black and huge, popping out of her head, and her smile was distorted – her lipsticked lips splitting her face, showing teeth the size of pebbles.

Janet fled the kitchen, straight into the back garden.

There were lots of little birds flapping around.

Janet looked over the hedge dividing their garden from the neighbours. A blonde woman was lying on a garden chaise, her sunhat over her face. A man was carrying barbeque equipment into the yard.

The blonde woman sat up and the sunhat fell. She looked directly at Janet and smiled silently. Her lipsticked lips spread way beyond her face and her eyes turned into huge black holes.

The man looked over. His dry lips spread out in a smile and his eyes popped, black holes which seemed to suck the surrounding air in.

Screaming, Janet ran from the garden into the street. The little brown birds flapped around her head and the shining sun screwed into her eyes, making everything look black.

The children playing on the street looked up at her, with toothy smiles extending past their faces and popping huge black eyes.

Janet ran, tripped over something and fell. She looked back, it was a corpse, still bleeding freshly from the mouth. The blood stained her cardigan.

She lay still, feeling her eyes grow out of her head.

The sound of police sirens growing closer filled the air.
