I was born with a defect. Apart from instinctual things, I forget alot… I mean a lot. If it wasn't for my friend… what was his name again?

Vinny

Oh yeah, Vinny. That's it. If it wasn't for him, well, you get the drift.

Move! It's coming again

Sorry about this. I forget what's stalking us, but the fear on Vinny's face is enough. Eyes bulging. Mouth open. Frantically pushing me forward.

That's the problem with my condition. I keep forgetting. I've forgotten why it's hard for me to move. Why my tail doesn't work right. Why there's a bite out of my flake.

Hide! Quick!

Vinny pushes me into a shallow ditch under the rocks. Sand blossoms out of the hole causing the water around us to mist up. It's hard to see what's out there in the gloom, until a huge shadow moves over us.

The darkness creeps in. Slowly, I turn around. Finding my bearings. I don't know where I am. You see, I have this condition.

Have I told you this?

Don't move

The fish at my side eyes are wide with fear. Mouth open. Body wiggling. But, there's a mist outside. Pretty specks of sand glinting in the darkness. I can't remember why we are here, but that doesn't matter. The wonder of the magical looking mist is amazing.

I move forward. Swish of a tail that doesn't work properly. I can't remember why? There in the middle, are scraps of food. Darting around I gobble them up. The other fish hisses at me to get back. But why should I listen? He just wants the food for himself.

Get back! It's still out there!

A large shadow keeps the fish back. Vinny. That's his name. He helps me. Keeps me safe. The memory trickles back seeing his wide eyes. Open mouth letting bubbles out.

Fresh as it was yesterday, I remember the pain in my side. A new gash leaks blood, clouds the water. Something was hunting us. Up turns to down. The water churns, sending me sideways. My fins don't work right. The shadow moved to strike again. Vinny screams out, but it's too late. I'm snapped up in a huge mouth and pushed through the water.

You see, I have this disability, I forget a lot of things… oh, right. The shark. Oh well, it doesn't seem to matter now.
