It hungers. – Short Horror Story

A simple game.

That’s all it was supposed to be, something to entertain us while we camped out for the night. I didn’t think that… this would happen.

It all started with us sitting around the campfire. Eating s’mores, talking, just hanging out; there were around thirty of us. We had gone on a field trip, the whole class, a couple teachers and some parents. Some people were in the mood to do some scary stuff and one of us says they found this post on reddit warning people about a game, you know, one of those that are supposed to summon a demon or some shit.

Didn’t really care to play so I just went to back to my tent.

Flash forward five minutes, I hear screams outside. Terrified, ear-piercing screeches; I open up my tent to see what’s going on.

The thing was eating.

A huge man, it had long arms, all covered in blood and dirt. It was chewing something, it had it’s back to me but I could instantly tell it was eating one of my friends. The thing was feasting on his body, squeezing all the life out of it, like it was eating his very soul.

In the middle of my panic, I noticed there were no sounds around except for the thing. I look around. Dozens and dozens of bloody human remains, all of them people I knew, people I cared about.

The air had the stench of blood in it, the dirt and trees were covered in a red tinge, illuminated by the dim campfire.

I felt my chest closing in, I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think.

“How can they all be dead!?” I thought in a panic, “I…. I can’t!”- –

Before I could recover my senses, the man was in front of me. Its appearance was grotesque, covered in blood, it had small white eyes, and a mouth full of teeth; rows and rows of them, it looked like the entrance to hell itself.

“SLEEP” it said. Its voice was unnatural, raggedy and deep.

It didn’t sound like it was hungry, it sounded tired. Like an animal in pain, waiting for its death, but it reached for me anyway.

I ran as fast as I could. The thing, this man, it didn’t follow. I arrived at a road, exhausted, but happy I managed to get away; a huge sense of relief washed over me.

I was stupid to think I would see it follow me, this was not a horror movie…

“sleep.”

It was with me all along.
