It was a long day of work and I’d gotten home exhausted and immediately hit the shower. My wife had gotten us some tickets to a comedy show for my birthday but when I couldn’t get out of work, I’d suggested she take one of her girlfriends from work so it was no surprise she wasn’t home though it was quite late. I figured she’d be back soon as I glanced at the time so I discarded the towel from my waist and threw on a pair of grey sweatpants before heading to the living room to watch TV while I waited for her.

I was only 20 minutes into the show I was watching when I heard a car pull up outside, surely an Uber she ordered home as she was likely drinking at the show. What rattled me was the sound of two car doors slamming shut, then minutes later the footsteps of heels up the walkway towards the house and my wife’s loud, intoxicated voice mingled with another woman’s voice.

She’d brought her friend back to the house? Slightly aggravated at the volume of their voices, a clear indicator of how much they’d been drinking, I quickly lifted the remote to turn the TV off and turned towards the room to retire to bed, but not before the door swing open and the two women loudly entered the house.

“Oh, babe! You’re up!!” Emma, my wife, exclaimed excitedly. I stopped and turned towards her, glancing quickly over the younger blonde standing in the doorway behind her clad in a skin-tight, black cocktail dress before looking back to my intoxicated wife who was clumsily kicking off her heels. She grinned and made a beeline towards me, her arms outstretched. I smiled and awaited her viooent embrace, immediately smelling the alcohol on her breath as she kissed me.

“This is my coworker, Hannah!” She blurted. I cast a glance back to the slender blonde who was stepping out of her own heels seeming a bit less drunk than my wife was, or perhaps she handled her liquor better. I gave her a polite nod and she just flashed a smile, her green eyes piercing and an air of mystery behind her expression which instantly turned me on. There was no question about it, the girl was stunning but far out of my league. She looked to be on her early or mid-twenties so I was surprised my wife had such a young friend but I suppose you meet people of all ages at work.

“She’s going to crash on the couch tonight.” My wife slurred.

“Oh, nonsense,” I stated, “I’ll take the couch. You two take the bed tonight.”

“Babe! I can’t ask you to do that on your birthday!” My wife sputtered.

“It’s fine, hun.” I chuckled. “In your 30s, your birthday is just another day. It’s no big deal.”

“Well that’s a piss poor attitude.” The work friend, Hannah muttered as she moved further into the living room towards us, something seductive and mischievous in the way her eyes locked onto mine. “Emma, you didn’t tell me it was your husband’s birthday. Why didn’t you take him out to the show?”

“That was the original plan.” Emma explained, not hiding the frustration from her voice. “He couldn’t get out of work today so that’s why I asked you to come. I had already bought the tickets.”

“So your poor husband spent his birthday working too?” Hannah exclaimed.

“It’s no big deal. I can catch another show on my day off.” I said modestly, trying to change the subject. I wasn’t one to dwell on things like that or feel bad for myself.

“But it’s your birthday right now.” Hannah countered. “If he couldn’t come to the show, then you should bring the show to him.” The blonde said, playfully nudging Emma’s shoulder.

“I’m not a comedian.” Emma snorted.

Hannah rolled her eyes. “I didn’t mean a comedy show.” Hannah bit back. “Maybe I should get an Uber home so you two can celebrate.”

“No, that’s really alright.” I stated. “You’re more than welcome to stay. Emma is probably too tired for any birthday shenanigans tonight.” I joked, nodding towards my wife who was slowly scampering towards the room likely to get changed into more comfortable clothes.
