I laid on my tech clever bed that has a lounging  massage chair on one side.  A king memory foam bed in the middle and complete cubicle organization section on the other that I had modified.

I laid there drinking a beer while I watched one of my drama series enjoying my life.

My name is Kevin Makinune.  Don’t try pronouncing my last name as you’ll more than likely butcher it….everyone does.

I’m 29 years old.

I’m single and not looking for anyone as I’m content in my status.

I’m about six foot even.  I’m not buff nor heavy but I’m not skinny either.  I’m about average weight and create for my height.

I have thick brown hair with blue eyes.

I have a nice job as an independent consultant for firms and corporations where I make a decent coin and the best advantage….I pretty much work from home.

And it wasn’t my **only** job.  But consulting brings most of my income.  Well that and some solid investments that sort of boomed in my face.

I’m not rich not am I poor…. I’m just comfortable.  Well at least to **me** I’m comfortable.

I live in a nice quiet suburb as I own my home.  I have a nice car.

And up until five seconds ago I lived alone.

I was about to take another drink of my special craft stout beer when my doorbell rang.

I looked at the time seeing it read a little past eleven at night.

I initially wanted to leave whoever was at my door hoping it was a late delivery or something but then came a frantic knock on my door.

I groaned and got up irritated that I had to get up.

I left my bedroom and traveled down the hall as I felt the stout had kicked in but not by much.

The knock became louder as I continued walking towards my door as I called out “Hold your horse’s I’m coming.”

I walked up to my door and turned on my outside light as I looked out my peep hole as my heart stopped.

*What the fuck is she doing here?* I wondered.

I pulled away from the door and rubbed my eyes to make sure the stout wasn’t making me hallucinate then looked again.

Yeah my eyes weren’t playing a trick on me.

The person on the other side of the door pleaded, “Please Kevin open the door.”

I sighed as I opened the door still not believing **she** was at my front door.

I opened the door and spoke, “Sam?”

There standing in front of me huddling to herself was Samantha Reid or Sam….my ex.

I looked down at my ex as she stood 5’4” who was currently bundled up holding herself shivering.  She looked up at me with her puppy dog green eyes, “I got kicked out and am currently homeless Kev.  I need a place to crash.  Please Kev I have no where to go.”

Now *normally* when someone has an ex come back into their life like Sam was doing they would ‘*normally*’ slam said door in their ex’s face.  Doubly so if the breakup was bad.

There’s a reason why people do it.

But in **my** case the breakup wasn’t entirely *bad*.  Sure it sucked when it happened but that was almost seven years ago.

I’ve sort of gotten over it and we kind of stayed in touch since she *left* me.

Before the breakup we were high college sweethearts who started dating in our early teens me being a year older and eventually sweethearts in school.

I wondered she was my forever girl as we did everything together but one fateful day we ran into a talent scout who had interest in Sam when she was barely in her 20’s….. actually if I remember correctly we had *just* celebrated her 20th birthday a month prior to *this* event.

And why wouldn’t the scout be interested in Sam.  She was beautiful.

Sam stood 5’4”, but I’ve already said that.  She had nice long brown hair with adoring light green eyes.  At the time she was petite weighing in at maybe 120lbs with fair curves and fun assets.

The scout got her some photo shoots that she fell in love with.

So much so she dropped out of college and ran off to the east coast to chase down an opportunity to become a *star*.

That was nearly seven years ago.   Going on to eight years making her 28 years old, I think….I no longer remembered her birthday……it was too painful.

I stood there still semi shocked she was standing in front of me shivering.

Sam spoke still shivering, “Kev?”

I blinked, “Oh sorry.”

I stepped apart letting Sam in as she bleakly smiled, “Thanks.”

I turned off the light outside and turned on the light to my inside as she walked in and I closed the door.

I spoke, “Here follow me.”

I guided Sam to my living room and allowed her to sit on my couch so she could warm up.

I asked, “Would you like some hot cocoa to help warm you up?”

Sam blushed as she nodded, “That would be fantastic.  Thank you.”

I nodded and walked into my kitchen.  I spoke loudly, “Do you have a preference if it’s milk or water?”

Sam called out, “Milk would be amazing.”

I pulled down one of my mugs as I reached into the fridge for the milk, “All I have is Non fat.”

Sam spoke, “That’ll work.”

I nodded as I poured the milk in the mug before throwing it into the microwave to heat up.

I spoke, “So when did you move back?”

Sam meekly spoke, “Tonight.”

I looked at her weird, “But I thought you said you were kicked out meaning you must be living in town?”

She spoke, “No I said I was kicked out and with no where to go I went to the only place I could think of…you.”

I rose my eyebrow, “Oh!  When did this happen?  I’m assuming earlier today?”

I watched her shake her head, “No it happen three days ago.”

Just then the microwave chimed reminding me why I was in the kitchen as Sam’s news didn’t make sense.

I opened the device to retrieve the mug of near hot milk.  I set the mug down and retrieved a packet of powdered hot cocoa.  I opened the packet and poured the powder into the mug then stirred.

I walked the mug of cocoa over to Sam and handed it to her, “Thanks.”

She lightly sipped the mug while I spoke, “So you were kicked out three days ago?”

She nodded.

I tried to connect the dots, “And you weren’t here when it happened?”

She shook her head.

I kept going, “Meaning you were back on the East coast?”

She nodded.

I looked at her, “So you what?  Drove here thinking I would welcome you back with open arms?”

Sam shook her head, “No.  Honestly I tried to find another place but lately all my gigs had been drying up and it was getting harder and harder to find work.”

She took another sip before she continued, “So after sulking in my van for a day I decided now was the perfect time to reinvent myself and start a new chapter in my life.  So I drove to the first place I could think of…you.”

I nodded, “Uh huh.”

She quickly spoke, “I’ll only be here a few days.  I don’t want to inconvenience you any more than I already have.  I was just desperate.”

I sighed, “Fine.  You finish off your cocoa.  I’ll get you some blankets and a pillow.  You can have the couch.”

I walked off and went to where I kept my spare blankets and old pillows that I hadn’t gotten to throwing away yet.

I walked back into the living room and set the items on the sofa next to her.

I stood up and spoke, “The half bathroom is down the hall.  I’ll be upstairs in my room if you need anything.  Good night.”

I got about two steps to leave before Sam spoke, “Kev?”

I turned my head to look at her, “Yes?”

She blushed as she spoke, “I’m really grateful you’re doing this.  I know you don’t have to after….”

She trailed off.

I looked at her coldly, “Get some sleep *Sam*.  We can talk more in the morning.”

She bowed her head, “Right.”

She looked up at me a tear in her eyes forming but she smiled trying to hold back her tear, “Good night Kev.”

I simply grunted turned and walked away turning off the light as I retreated to my room.
