The winter night was cold and bleak, with only the moon and stars shrouding the city in a soft glow. The city never truly slept, with the hum of machines and vehicles always in the background. In the dimly lit hospital, the nurses and doctors were still hard at work, going through their nightly rounds and tending to the patients in their care.

Among the sounds of the machines, there was the occasional beep of a heart monitor, a sound all too familiar to Dr. Avery Green. She had been a cardiac surgeon for almost a decade now, saving countless lives through her skilled hands. Yet, tonight was different. Tonight, she was restless and irritable, her mind wandering to things she shouldn’t be thinking about. She had worked herself into exhaustion, but even after all the surgeries, all the hours, she couldn’t shake off the elusive feeling, the deep ache in her chest that no one could ever diagnose.

She sighed, knowing that it would be a while before she could shut off her mind and rest. As she made her way down the hall, she saw another doctor passing by. Dr. John Callaghan, a handsome man with a slight Southern drawl, flashed her a quick smile.

“Long night, Dr. Green?”

Avery smiled back, appreciating the brief reprieve from her misery.

“You already know the answer to that, Dr. Callaghan.”

He chuckled, his eyes crinkling up in the dim light.

“I do indeed. Listen, I just discharged Mrs. Wilson, the elderly lady in room 231. She’s all set to go home, but she needs someone to take her home. I was thinking if you’re free later, maybe you could help out?”

Avery felt a sense of relief wash over her. It would be a change from the usual monotony, and anything was better than the empty bed awaiting her back at home.

“Sure, I don’t mind. When is she ready to go?”

“In an hour or so. I’ll let the nurses know, and you can come back to her room when you’re ready.”

With that, he gave her a nod and went on his way. Avery watched him go, feeling a tingle run down her spine. It wasn’t until he was out of sight that she realized that she had been staring at him for far too long.

Shaking her head, Avery continued with her duties, trying her best to keep her mind on her work. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been at it when her pager went off, alerting her to a patient in ICU.

When she arrived at the ICU unit, she went straight to work, taking in the information that her team had gathered, and quickly came up with a plan. She worked quickly, determined to save the young man’s life, but it wasn’t until later, when he was finally stabilized and taken to a regular ward, that Avery realized that she had completely lost track of time.

The hour had come and gone, and she had forgotten about Mrs. Wilson.

Feeling guilty, Avery made her way to her room, hoping that the elderly woman would still need help.

To her relief, Mrs. Wilson was still there, looking up at her with a gentle smile.

“I thought you’d forgotten about me, dear. Everyone’s been telling me to call a taxi.”

Avery smiled apologetically.

“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Wilson. I had a complicated surgery earlier, and it took longer than anticipated. But I’m here now, and I’ll take you home.”

The journey was quiet, with Avery focusing on the road ahead and Mrs. Wilson dozing off in the back seat. It wasn’t until they got to her house that Avery realized that she was feeling something other than exhaustion.

It was something akin to excitement, mixed with the danger of the forbidden.

With a nervous smile, Avery helped Mrs. Wilson out of the car, watching as she made her way to the front door with a few parting words of thanks and blessing.

As she got back in her car, Avery felt the undeniable pull in her chest, the sensation of her heartbeat quickening. She realized then that it wasn’t just exhaustion that had been plaguing her all evening.

It was desire, and the knowledge that it was forbidden made it all the more tantalizing.

Before she could talk herself out of it, Avery drove back to the hospital, making her way to the break room. She knew that Dr. Callaghan would be there, waiting for her.

He was there, sitting quietly in the dimly lit room, nursing a cup of coffee.

“Hey,” he said as she walked in. “How did the drop-off go?”

Avery’s heart was racing in her chest as she made her way towards him.

“It was fine. Listen, can I talk to you about something?”

Dr. Callaghan looked up, sensing that something was different.

“Of course, what’s on your mind?”

Avery took a deep breath, the words tumbling out of her lips before she could stop them.

“I want you, John. I know it’s forbidden, but I can’t help it. I’ve been feeling all night like something was missing, and now I know what it is. I want to be with you.”

John Callaghan’s eyes widened, surprise mingling with desire.

“Avery, I don’t know…”

But before he could say anything else, Avery was already moving towards him, her body pressing on his as their lips met in a deep and passionate kiss. It was like an electric shock, the forbidden nature of it all building up in them, propelling them forward.

As they stumbled towards the couch at the corner of the room, Avery couldn’t help but think that this was a mistake. Yet, as John’s hands roamed over her body, awakening long-dormant sensations within her, she knew that it was too late to stop.

They were lost in a haze of passion, their bodies entwined in a dance that neither wanted to end. The darkness of the room only served to heighten the forbidden nature of what they were doing, thrilling them both with the sense of danger.

It was like something out of a fever dream, the way that their bodies moved together, in harmony and sync. Avery couldn’t remember the last time that she had felt so alive, so in tune with herself.

It wasn’t until the early hours of the morning that they finally tangled themselves apart, exhausted and spent. The realization of what they had just done hit them hard, even as they both knew that they couldn’t stop.

For Avery, it was like a weight had been lifted off her chest, replaced by a newfound lightness. As she made her way back to her own apartment, knowing that she should be feeling guilty, all she could think about was the way that John had made her heart race and her body come alive.

It was a forbidden encounter, one that should never have happened, but Avery knew that she was already too far gone. She couldn’t go back to the way things were before, not after she had tasted the forbidden fruit.

It was dangerous and thrilling, and Avery knew that she would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

So she walked into her apartment, her heart beating loudly in her chest, and smiled to herself. This was a secret that she would keep to the grave, a memory that would stay with her always.

Heartbeats in the night, the forbidden encounter at the hospital. It was a mistake, a moment of madness, but Avery knew that it was also the best thing that had ever happened to her.
