As the sun began to set on the sleepy town of Millfield, Indiana, Desire watched the last rays of sunlight sending gold and orange tones across the still-green lawns surrounding the houses. It was a gorgeous autumn day, and she had already enjoyed a walk down by the river with her favorite boy, Ethan. They had chatted and laughed, shared kisses and hugs, and revelled in the beauty of the crisp, clear air.

But they had parted methods, each heading back to their respective homes, just before the light faded into darkness. And now, Desire was alone, her own thoughts becoming her sole companion. She had a lot on her mind lately, especially since Joe had returned. Joe, her ex-boyfriend, the one who had broken her heart and shattered all her dreams of happily ever after.

Joe had been the love of her life, at least until he had moved away to go to school on the West Coast. They had been trying to make a long-distance relationship work, but it had all fallen aside, and Desire had been devastated. But now he had come back, suddenly appearing in her life again, and stirring up old memories and emotions.

She had met him for drinks a few nights ago, and they had talked for hours, catching up on each other’s lives. She had all the time been comfortable with Joe, even if the chemistry between them was never quite as electric as she had imagined it would be. But still, there was something about him that just made her feel safe and secure, like he had her back no matter what.

But then there was Ethan, the new kid in college, the one who had taken her by surprise and swept her off her feet. Ethan was sweet and charming, all the time making her laugh and feel good about herself. He was also fiercely protective, all the time ready to defend her honor or take her side in an argument. He was everything she had been looking for, and yet, now that Joe was back in the picture, she couldn’t help but feel a pull towards him too. It was like some kind of twisted love triangle, with her heart trapped in the middle.

As she walked down the quiet street to her parents’ house, she felt torn between wanting to be alone and wanting someone to hold her. She just didn’t know which one of them she wanted by her side. And then, as she was unlocking the front door, she heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. Her first instinct was to run, to get inside and lock the door tight, but then she heard a soft voice whisper her name.

“Desire? Is that you?”

It was Ethan, and he was peeking out from behind the bushes, a mischievous grin on his face.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, a little confused. He usually walked her all the way to her doorstep and then made a quick getaway, not wanting to overstep.

“I wanted to surprise you,” he said, shrugging one shoulder. “I figured we could hang out for a little while longer before I go home.”

“Oh, okay,” she said, still feeling a bit flustered. She was wearing her pajamas and had just taken off all her makeup, not exactly ready for business. But before she could protest further, Ethan was already pushing his way through the bushes, pulling her towards him in a tight embrace.

As they hugged, Desire could feel her heart rate starting to rise, her body tingling with anticipation. Ethan felt so warm and so strong, his arms wrapping protectively around her, his body pressing up against hers. They had fooled around a little bit in the past, but had never gone all the way. Desire was still a virgin, and she felt a little nervous around Ethan sometimes, unsure of whether or not she was really ready to take that next step.

As if sensing her hesitation, Ethan pulled back from the hug and looked at her intently, his eyes searching hers for a clue as to what she was thinking.

“Can I kiss you?” he asked, his voice low and husky.

Desire nodded, feeling a wave of warmth spread through her body. She had all the time loved kissing Ethan, loved the way his lips felt against hers, the way his tongue would tangle with hers and send shivers down her spine.

Without another word, he leaned in and captured her lips in a soft, gentle kiss. Desire melted into his embrace, her hands running over his shoulders and down his back, feeling the muscles tense and relax under her touch.

As they kissed, she felt the unmistakable bulge in his pants growing harder and harder against her thigh. She knew what that meant, knew that he was turned on and ready for more. And for a moment, she felt tempted to give in, to let him take her right there on the front porch.

But then, as suddenly as it had started, the moment broke. The front door swung open, and there stood Joe, looking at them with a mixture of surprise and confusion on his face.

“Hey, guys. What’s going on?” he asked, his eyes darting back and forth between them.

Desire felt herself blush bright red, suddenly feeling very self-conscious and exposed.

“Oh, hi Joe. What are you doing here?” she asked, trying to sound casual.

“I came by to drop off some paperwork for your dad,” he said, holding up a manila envelope. “I thought I could catch up with you for a little bit before heading back out.”

Desire felt torn between wanting him to stay and wanting him to go. She didn’t know what to say, or how to act, with Ethan still standing there next to her, his body close and warm.

And then Joe stepped closer, his hand reaching out to take hers. She felt his fingers slide between hers, his grip strong and comforting.

“It’s good to see you again, Desire,” he whispered, his breath warm against her cheek.

Desire closed her eyes and leaned into him, feeling the way his body enveloped hers, the way his heart beat against her chest. She felt consumed by this sensation, letting the intimacy and familiarity wash over her. Until a moment later, she heard a quiet clearing of a throat.

“Oh, sorry,” said Ethan, a strained smile on his face. “I guess I should get going. We can hang out again tomorrow if you want?” he asked, addressing Desire.

“Sure, that sounds great,” she said, still feeling a little dazed.

Ethan gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before stepping away. But as he turned to leave, he shot Joe a quick, dirty look that Desire couldn’t quite figure out.

Once he was out of sight, Joe turned back to her, his gaze still intense.

“Is he your boyfriend?” he asked, his words weighted with meaning.

Desire hesitated, not sure what to say.

“He’s a friend,” she finally settled on. “We’ve been hanging out a lot lately.”

“I see,” said Joe, his smile a little forced. “Well, that’s good. It’s important to have friends.”

They stood there for a few more moments, just looking at each other. Desire felt a flutter of something deep inside her chest, something that she couldn’t quite place. But then Joe leaned in and kissed her, deepening the kiss until she felt like her knees might give out.

It was like an explosion of emotions, a wildfire of desire and longing that she had been trying to suppress for so long. She felt consumed by the heat of it, by the sudden eruption of feelings that had begun to take hold.

For a few moments, they kissed passionately, their hands roaming over each other’s bodies. But then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. Joe pulled away from her, his eyes dark with emotion.

“Sorry,” he said, taking a step back. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

Desire felt a pang of disappointment, a part of her wanting him to stay and not go.

“It’s okay,” she said, smiling at him. “I kind of liked it, actually.”

Joe smiled back at her, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

“You did, did you?” he said, leaning in for another gentle kiss.

As they kissed, Desire felt her emotions starting to get the better of her. She felt pulled towards Joe, and yet she couldn’t deny the way that Ethan made her feel either. She was caught up in a whirlwind of emotions, and she had no idea how to navigate the treacherous waters of her own heart.

But for now, she let herself get lost in the feeling of Joe’s arms around her, the scent of him filling her nose, and the sound of his heartbeat thundering in her ears. She knew that it was all gonna end in heartbreak, in one way or another, but for a moment at least, she just wanted to enjoy the delicate dance of desire that was unfolding between them.
