I need air. It was a mantra I said to myself every time I felt claustrophobic in the car. It worked every time and I was ready to take on anything the island had to offer. As soon as they entered the city limits, the smell of asphalt and concrete hit me and I took a deep breath. It was a sign of civilization. It meant there were people and they had needs and I was needed. It was a gorgeous thing and I welcomed it with open arms.

“How do you feel about that, Mara? Do you feel safe here?”

She looked out the window again. “I feel safe. I don’t know what to expect on the outside world but here in this small place, I feel safe. Everyone is friendly and the police are never far away. If I need help, I know who to call and they will come right away. I don’t have to worry about anything here.”

“That’s because you’re a white man and you’re not used to this kind of place ‘, I said with a smile. “When you go back home, you will have to deal with people who look like me and have skin like mine. You will have to deal with the fact that we exist and that we are not gonna go away. We are gonna be here and we are gonna be a force to be reckoned with. And I need you to be ready for that.Okay?”

“Okay,” she replied with a nod. “I’ll try my best not to fall asleep on the drive back home. I’m tired and my head is spinning from all the models I have to choose from. I have to make a decision by the end of the day and I can barely keep my eyes open right now.”

“I know it is hard to choose.I would have loved to have stayed longer in this wonderful place but I have to return to reality. I have to go back to the life I left and that means leaving you behind. It is what it is and I can only hope you understand.”

“I understand. I get very attached to places and people as you know. It’s a curse and a blessing. I can’t stay here. I can’t stay on this small island. It’s too beautiful and too full of life for me to leave. I would be a burden and no one here would want that. So I have to go back and I have to make a living and I have to prove to them that I am worth the trip. I have to prove that I am worthy of being here and that is why I need you to be on your game today. I need you to help me make that decision. What should I do? Where should I go? What should I wear?”

“I already told you what to do. You should go to the beach and get your picture taken.
Then go shopping and get your hair done and get some new clothes. You should wear something that makes you feel good. Something that makes you feel like you are on vacation and not working. That is what you should wear when you go back home. Nothing more, nothing less. Got it?”

“Vacation? Home? What are you talking about? I live here
