You walk alone : Scary Stories – Short Horror Story

Death comes for us all, for some way too soon.

For me it came much too fast, at just 22.

With a truck and its driver, and a bottle of gin

He cut my life short before it could even begin

Weightless and nameless, my soul left its shell.

Contorted, transported, to a place just like hell.

The land of the dead, where nothing survives.

Empty souls roaming, no longer alive.

A path stretches before me, endless it seems.

Deep into the land where the music is screams

Death appears before me, cloaked in black.

It beckons me forward but I long to go back.

It points its sword at the path, and gives me a nod

It has no eyes that I can see but its stare is piercing hot.

“This is the path that all must walk, they walk it through with me.

You must not linger here too long or else you’ll never flee.”

“But I’m too young, I can’t be dead, there must be some mistake!

“I want to live, can’t you see? My soul’s not yours to take!”

I screamed and cried and begged and pleaded, to please just let me go.

But alas, Death was not to be swayed, for it simply said “No.”

I dug my heels into the dirt, and looked into its darkened hood.

I stood my ground, and refused to go, and swore I never would.

Death shook its head, and turned to go, moving swiftly down the path.

Its sword in hand, it disappeared, then came a vicious laugh.

Raw and deep, the laughter came, I could hear their sheer delight.

They crawl and shuffle across the plains, with me in their sight.

Panic rises in my gut, there’s nowhere left to run.

They move in closer, grinning, and I think ‘what have I done?’

“Hey kid.” Says the one with teeth as sharp as knives.

“We see you’re here all alone, must have lost your guide.”

The laughter’s deafening from all sides, they tremble with anticipation.

I close my eyes as they inch closer, wishing it was my imagination.

“Death’s not here to keep you safe, but don’t worry you’re not on your own.”

It cackles as it draws near, reaching for my throat.

I realize now what I have done, now there is no escape.

I should have gone on the path with Death, instead I’m trapped in this place.

I can run as fast as I can but alas it’s all in vain.

When they finally catch up to me, I learn I still feel pain.

There’s nowhere left to go, this is my only home.

Please, when you die go with Death or else you’ll walk alone.
