The stage lit up with an array of lights in all different colours, happy music permeated the air. And all the children’s faces–who were seated with their parents–lit up with a sense of wonder, as they waited for the curtains to open.

Suddenly the music stopped, and the lights went out, everything went pitch black. A single spotlight came on, and shone on the centre of the stage.

Then a drumroll started playing, and the curtain opened, revealing a dapper looking man, a twirly moustache hung above his tiny mouth. He was wearing a tuxedo, with a cape lined with crimson silk. His movement as he walked onto the stage displayed elegance. He approached the microphone, and spoke to the audience before him…

“We have something very special for you fine folks tonight!” The Puppeteer announced, with a commanding voice.

All of the children cheered from the audience.

“We are going to need two members from the audience for tonight’s puppet show. Now who would like to participate?” The Puppeteer said.

All of the children raised their hands into the air, desperate to be picked.

The man’s rodent-like eyes darted around the audience, as he twizzled his mustache between his finger and thumb.

He pointed at little Judy in the back row first. Then he pointed to Zack, who was seated in the middle row. Both their parents urged them up onto the stage.

He greeted them both warmly as they came up on stage.

“Ok, now ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, now we are going to prepare for the puppet show,” the man said as he gestured for them to go behind the curtain.

The lights came back on, and the music started again, it was even louder this time. So loud that Judy and Zack’s screams from behind the curtain were muffled. And the audience, and their parents remained oblivious to the horrors they were being subjected to.

After ten minutes the music stopped again, and the lights went out. Two spotlights shone on the stage now, illuminating what used to be Zack and Judy. Now it was two grotesque puppets made of flesh. Their bodies were mangled beyond recognition. The flesh on their faces was torn into a bloody smile, and their eyeballs replaced with mirror shards.

The parents all looked horrified, and the children in the audience were now getting visibly frightened. Zack and Judy’s parents were wide eyed with shock, in utter disbelief of what they were seeing, refusing to believe it.

The Puppeteer began to laugh hysterically…

Zack and Judy’s mangled corpses began to dance on the stage, as the puppeteer commanded them from above the stage via their tendons, which were now puppet strings.
