In my sight, the sun rippled. It had stared right at me for hours now. I was exhausted and out of sweat to give.

All directions I looked at showed only the blue sea, which I’d grown to hate. It taunted me like nothing else. Here I was, thirsty enough to kill and surrounded by water.

We were three on the little boat. Me, James, and… Alex? He was missing. Adrenaline filled me. I jerked around in the bot, catching James’s attention, and stared into the water trying to spot any sign of Alex but I could only see the darkness of the sea.

“What are you doing?” Alex said. It took me a second to realize it was his voice. I slowly turned back, and I saw him sitting there staring at me with a strange expression. I couldn’t believe it. I swear I had not seen him.

“It’s best to save energy with the sun,” a voice I did not recognize said. I looked to the right and found another man there. What the hell was happening? I could swear we’d only been three men on this boat yet here I was staring at him.

“Who are you?” I said, shuffling away from him.

“What’s gotten into you?” Alex said. “Todd here has been stranded with us the entire time.”

“What are you talking about Alex? Two seconds ago he wasn’t here and neither were you. Wait a second.”

It hit me. I understood why it was Alex who was protecting this new man, Todd. They weren’t human at all. They must have crept onto this boat from the sea to mess with us. Instantly I kicked away, and shrieked at them to keep away from me.

“Joyce,” I said. “They’re not humans.”

For a moment they were all silent, staring at me. Wait a second. Was Joyce also one of them? How come I couldn’t come up with any memories of him before I got on the boat. Oh no. That would mean I’m surrounded.

They all started laughing as if something hilarious was happening. But I couldn’t get it. What could possibly be so funny about my demise. Their jaws opened up further, and their laughs grew louder. Their eyes turned crazed. Maybe I should just jump off the boat.

Then I blinked and they all disappeared, and I realized that I’d been alone all along, drifting somewhere in the sea.
