A small child giggled
A woman whistled
A man was silent
Wind shrieked its banshee wail
Full moon cowered behind clouds
Shadows danced without owners
Cats fell off walls
There are no lights on in the house
No one there has need to see
Curtains fluttered without a breeze
Windows opened. A door closed.
The house took me in
It knew I was coming
It knew I wouldn’t leave
A small child giggled
I knew that child
My son
A woman whistled
She sounded happy
For a little while
A man was silent
His tongue
Turned to stone
This same house
Welcomed me
For I belonged.
