“Fee-Fi!”

“Fee-Fi-Po-Po!”

“Bella’s coming!”

“Bella the Killa!”

Kids around the corner of Sixth and Main scatter like the birds from a shaken tree. Josif Bella, the most feared cop in the neighbourhood, was seen approaching from a block down.

Bella was the Ogre Supreme of the Nine Blocks. Six foot eight, three hundred and forty pounds, built like an industrial meat locker. It was said he was never once taken down by anyone – born a tank. One time, he was hit by a speeding car and stayed on his feet.

They say he’s killed eight people with his bare hands.

With someone like Bella, the best policy is to just stay clear. Nothing good comes from being caught in those bulging eyeballs. If he even looks at you, you’re halfway to damnation. When Bella turns up, you turn down.

Some kids, as soon as the name is called out, flee, far away. But some who want to witness the awesome terror of Bella menacing the streets run up to the upper levels of abandoned construction sites nearby and watch from shadows.

“Oh no, there’s Eddie down there”, someone whispers. Eddie, a stray dog that’s been hanging around these streets, had settled onto the curbside now the kids are all gone. But, he smells something, a beast of sorts. Eddy gets up to locate the source of the odour. He sees Bella emerging.

“Get outta there Eddie”, a kid implores with a murmur.

Catching the sight of Bella, Eddie starts barking, perhaps to sound a warning, or as a salutary insult to Bella. Bella hates dogs. Of course he does.

Eddie’s barks grow louder and more intense, as if to make known his hostile intention. Bella, visibly annoyed, rushes to Eddie, to kick at him, perhaps. But before Bella can get to him, Eddie lunges at the tall figure, towards the neck it seems, and catches Bella’s left arm. Bella lets out a loud shriek of pain as he falls backwards, raising a puff of dust. A roar of laughter and cheers of the surrounding kids ring out.

“Eddie took him down!”

“Go Eddie!”

It’s the exact reenactment of the David and Goliath battle. Again, David prevails.

But the moment quickly passes. Bella comes to. Eddie still has his jaws locked in on Bella’s arm. Furious, and hurt, Bella pounds Eddie with his fist of the other arm. It lands so hard that Eddie immediately goes limp. A gasp of horror snuffs out the jubilation of the kids. Bella gets up, dusts himself off, starts stomping on Eddie with demonic violence, the head, the body, the legs, everywhere. Even when all of Eddie’s body turns into a formless pool of blood he keeps stomping, as if trying to drive it into the ground. The kids are speechless. There are tears streaming down.

The grim afternoon fall silent except for Bella’s thumping on the blood soaked pavement.
