Throughout my life I’ve always been terrified of the dark, not scared…terrified. But I’m not scared of complete darkness, the one I fear is when its light enough to make things out but too dark to tell what they really are. This is the main reason for why I hate sunsets.

For some background; I live with my roommate in a two floor house, been doing so for the last two or three years and I haven’t had any problems.

My roommate went back home for the holidays and I had to stay alone for a couple weeks. Everything was going okay until one night I suddenly was woken up by a loud noise coming from downstairs. Tried turning on the lights but there was no power, I couldn’t find my cellphone either but I decided to go down anyway, what’s the worst that could happen?

I get to the kitchen, still no power. I could see a little bit since there was light coming in from outside. I heard that loud noise again, it sounded like glass shattering.

There was someone in the living room.

I see it standing in front of the window next to the entrance, I can’t make it out. Its features seem human but they’re all completely darkened, sure, it had arms but they were so long that they touched the floor; it had long legs that made it as high as the ceiling and I could hear it breathe heavily.

I ran back to my room as fast as I could and desperately searched for my phone…

I could not find it.

I locked myself in there and waited for night to pass. But It didn’t seem to end, it rained for a while and then it stopped, the skies outside cleared but the sun wouldn’t come out.

I could hear it outside my room.

Breathing, talking to itself, scratching the door. I was so sleep deprived and it was so dark that there were times where I thought the stranger had managed to get inside the room. An uncomfortable and endless silence enveloped everything.

I could hear it breathe and it could hear me cry for help; just the two of us in stranded in the same house, like castaways stuck in a deserted island, but there was no food, no water and no sunlight, only the silence and the weak darkness.

Finally, there is a small ray of sunlight coming through my window, for a moment I let myself feel hopeful.

I didn’t hear it outside anymore so I carefully walk downstairs, it’s empty.

Ecstatic, I run to the door and try to open it. It doesn’t open, neither do the windows, I can’t even break them.

I can’t get out and it’s getting dark outside.
