Inside of an incubator, two earthborn, nonhuman creatures sat together talking, as one of them, the worker, edited bits and pieces of human DNA, taken from the blood sampling of a mosquito that came from a block of amber, to make sure the human could survive.

“And this park,” the worker’s friend said, “this ‘Homo Sapiens Park’—you don’t think it’ll cause any trouble? Any at all?”

“Truly,” the worker replied, “I don’t. These humans, we can keep them contained. They won’t be running amuck, like they were without our supervision. Back when they used to dominate the planet.”

“But you don’t think they’ll be able to weasel their way out of it somehow? The way they developed… It just makes me think that because of how quick they were—remember, it only took them two hundred thousand years to take over everything and then ruin it—you don’t think they’ll figure out some escape? Some way to get out and then ruin us like they did to themselves back then?”

“No,” the worker said, “I don’t think so. I mean, I’ve seen the controls. It’s all very well-contained. They may be smart, but even the most brilliant couldn’t do the impossible. And besides, if they really do outpace us, that’ll be quite impressive, considering we’ve been around for millions of years and we still haven’t messed it all up.”

“We haven’t arrived at messing it all up though—not yet at least. But that’s the thing: We’re evidently slower than they were. They created nukes, and space travel, and the internet. We still haven’t even gotten to most of those things, and I’m not even certain we’ll know what to do with them once we get there. But these humans… I think they could be dangerous.”

Then the worker creature shrugged. “I don’t know,” it said finally, after thinking for a long time. “I’m just here to do my job, get paid, and go home to my family. The responsibility really isn’t on me.”

And the friend of the worker watched on, just as they repeated the same mistakes as their predecessors.
